Frequently asked questions
Insurers typically look at your driving record, your age and how long you've been licensed, where you live, the car you drive and how much you drive it, your coverage limits and deductibles, and — in most states — your credit history. Each insurer weighs these differently, which is why quotes for the same driver can vary a lot.
Most policies combine several coverages. Liability pays for injury and damage you cause to others. Collision covers damage to your own car from an accident. Comprehensive covers non-collision damage like theft, hail, or hitting an animal. Many policies also include uninsured motorist and medical payments coverage.
Every state sets a minimum liability requirement, but the minimum is often well below what a serious accident costs. Drivers who own their car outright sometimes carry liability only, while lenders and leasing companies usually require collision and comprehensive. Compare coverage levels, not just price.
Standard policies generally exclude routine maintenance and wear, mechanical breakdown, intentional damage, and using your personal vehicle for commercial delivery or ridesharing without an endorsement. Personal belongings stolen from your car are usually covered by renters or home insurance instead.
Rates can change at renewal even if nothing about your driving changed. Common reasons include a claim or ticket on your record, a change of address, adding a driver or vehicle, the loss of a discount, or an across-the-board rate adjustment your insurer filed for your state.
Car insurance is a contract with an insurer: you pay a premium, and in exchange the insurer pays for certain losses described in your policy — damage you cause to others, damage to your own vehicle, or both, depending on the coverages you buy. Nearly every state requires drivers to carry at least some liability coverage.
